The whole house water filter unit is designed as a point-of-entry system that filters water directly as it enters a home plumbing system from a municipal or private well water source. While not as immediately effective as point-of-use water filters, like counter top/under the sink filters that filter water directly before use, the whole house water filter provides clean, filtered water to every water source in the household. Ideally, this type of filtration system is used in conjunction with point-of-use in order to ensure the removal of lead and other elements that corrode from pipes after water enters the home’s plumbing system.

For municipal water, the main purpose of installing wholehouse system is to remove sediment and chlorine. By removing chlorine and other harmful chemicals at the point-of-entry, whole house water filters not only provide cleaner, healthier water, but better air quality, as well. They prohibit chlorine from vaporizing in the air when used in the shower and dishwasher. Inhaling chlorine vapor is strongly correlated to the onset or aggravation of asthma and bronchitis. Whole house water filters also prevent harmful chemicals from embedding in clothing in the laundry, and they lessen the amount of detergent needed in both laundry and dishwashing.

Whole house cartridge filters are used primarily in residential applications for the removal of sediment as well as chlorine, chemicals, and treatment of bad taste and odor. Specialty cartridges for the removal of iron and other contaminants are also offered. These systems require regular maintenance consisting of replacing the filter cartridges.

3.1. Sediment Removal
The multi-media is a highly efficient media for the removal of suspended matter. It has irregular surface characteristics affording maximum removal of suspended matter throughout the filter bed. This model removes the normal sediment down to the 20 – 40 micron range.
The system will backwash automatically at preset intervals to eliminate the accumulated suspended matter and regrade the filter bed.
There is no media to replace as the filter will last indefinitely.

3.2 Carbon Removal
The activated carbon media with its extremely high surface area can absorb many times its weight of taste and odour due chiefly to the presence of various organic compounds and dissolved gases. This system will remove chlorine, organics, trihalometheses, trichlorsethylene, sediments and unpleasant taste and odour.
The system will backwash automatically at preset intervals to eliminate the accumulated suspended matter and regrade the filter bed.
It is necessary to replace the carbon filter bed when the capacity for taste and odour is exhausted.

Small amounts of iron are often found in water because of the large amount of iron present in the soil and because corrosive water will pick up iron from pipes. Clothing washed in water containing excessive iron may become stained a brownish color. The taste of beverages, such as tea and coffee, may also be affected by iron. Manganese produces a brownish color in laundered clothing, leaves black particles on fixtures and as with iron, affects the taste of beverages, including coffee and tea.

IRON, HYDROGEN SULFIDE AND MANGANESE REMOVAL FILTER SPECIFICATIONS

Greensand is formulated from a glauconite greensand which is capable of removing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from water through oxidation and filtration. Soluble iron and manganese are oxidized and precipitated by contact with higher oxides of manganese on the greensand granules. The hydrogen sulfide is eliminated by oxidation to sulfate and an insoluble precipitate. Precipitates are then filtered and removed by backwashing.

CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR PROPER USE

• pH range: 6.5 or higher
• Iron (Fe) up to 15 ppm.
• Manganese up to 15 ppm.
• Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) up to 5 ppm.

The idea behind a water softener is simple. The calcium and magnesium ions in the water are replaced with sodium ions. Since sodium does not precipitate out in pipes or react badly with soap, both of the problems of hard water are eliminated. To do the ion replacement, the water in the house runs through a bed of small plastic beads or through a chemical matrix called zeolite. The beads or zeolite are covered with sodium ions. As the water flows past the sodium ions, they swap places with the calcium and magnesium ions. Eventually, the beads or zeolite contain nothing but calcium and magnesium and no sodium, and at this point they stop softening the water. It is then time to regenerate the beads or zeolite.

Regeneration involves soaking the beads or zeolite in a stream of sodium ions. Salt is sodium chloride, so the water softener mixes up a very strong brine solution and flushes it through the zeolite or beads (this is why you load up a water softener with salt). The strong brine displaces all of the calcium and magnesium that has built up in the zeolite or beads and replaces it again with sodium. The remaining brine plus all of the calcium and magnesium is flushed out through a drain pipe.
